Recessed lighting is often referred to as can lighting. Basically, the light is recessed into the ceiling. The rim of the can, which holds the bulb and houses the electrical wiring, is in the ceiling. It is out of sight. All you see is a light coming from the ceiling and generally a ring around the circle where the hole is cut into the ceiling. You can choose from a variety of colors, generally white, chrome or gold. The reason these lights are so popular is because they are out of sight. They are not hanging into the room, causing you to loose any head space.
With the light fixtures in the ceiling, it makes the ceiling look higher than it would if there were a bulk fixture in the center of the room. In general, it makes the room look bigger.
