Stormy weather and power outages tend to go hand in hand. In most cases, the outages are rather short and last for a few hours. However, there are still some things you need to know in case the power does go out. It is important you follow these steps provided by your electrician in Fort Lauderdale in order to save yourself from wasted food and damaged electronics. If you have a home generator, you will not need to worry about these things. Elcon Electric can discuss your standby generator options if you would like more information.
When the power does go out;
*Unplug sensitive electronics, i.e. computers, televisions, kitchen appliances and game consoles. When the power does come back on, it is possible for surges to damage anything that is still plugged into the wall the second power is restored to your home.
*Leave the refrigerator and freezer closed. This will keep your food cold for several hours and prevent you from having to throw out any items. Your freezer can maintain its temperature for about 24 hours if the door is left shut.
*Turn off any light switches. You can leave one on so you will know when power has been restored. The idea is to prevent a huge draw on the electrical grid when the power is restored.
*During the summer months, make sure your blinds and curtains are closed to keep out the sun’s scorching rays. If temperatures are fair, open your windows and doors to get the air circulating.
*Use bottled water for drinking, just in case the filtering systems have gone down. Your county will typically let you know if this has happened.
